Information for Translators
Welcome to the translation team for Our Aeneid! Whether you’re a veteran Latinist or someone reconnecting with Latin for the first time since school, this page will guide you through how to participate as a translator.
Each translator is assigned a short section of 50 lines from Vergil’s Aeneid in Latin. These lines will be selected based on your preferences (book, theme, or line grouping) and current availability. You’ll also be asked to submit a brief commentary about your translation approach and what the Aeneid means to you.
If you are translating into a language other than English, we also ask you to include a literal English version of your translation to support the editorial process. This version will not be published in the main body of the book.
Once you submit your translation, a member of the editorial team will review your work. There is no formal style guide, and we encourage diverse interpretations and creative voices. Editors are not trying to rewrite your work. They are here to:
Ensure your translation communicates your intended meaning.
Help preserve clarity and linguistic alignment with the Latin.
Offer feedback or suggestions based on your commentary and goals.
Anyone with a sincere interest in Latin and a willingness to engage with the text can apply to be a translator. You do not need to be an expert or have formal credentials, but you must work honestly with the Latin and collaborate with your editor to ensure your interpretation comes through clearly. We also welcome group translations—such as those from AP Latin classes or Latin clubs—but individual student names should not be listed; instead, please use the name of the group or teacher.
