Latin Stories for Students is a new edition of George Lovett Bennett’s Easy Latin Stories for Beginners, a Victorian schoolbook that has started generations of students on connected Latin prose. Most of its stories come from Herodotus: Arion and the dolphin, the ring of Polycrates, the thief who robbed King Rhampsinitus, Zopyrus at Babylon, and the long story of the Persian invasions of Greece.

The stories are short and graded, with English headings to guide the reader, and Bennett’s notes on grammar and history follow the text. This edition marks the long vowels throughout and adds a vocabulary made from the stories themselves, with the commonest words gathered first, and illustrations chosen for the stories. It suits students in their second or third year of Latin.

Arion was a famous lyre-player. He had long lived at the court of Periander, king of Corinth. Then he wanted to sail to Italy and Sicily.
