Herodotus Latinus is the complete Histories of Herodotus in Latin, all nine books, with the long vowels marked throughout. Herodotus wrote so that the deeds of men would not be forgotten, and his history runs from the story of Croesus and Solon through the customs of Egypt and Scythia to the Persian Wars and the battles of Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea.
The Latin is Johannes Schweighäuser’s translation, as reprinted in the Paris edition of 1858. It is plain narrative prose, and many of its stories will already be familiar to students from their first readers. It suits students who have finished a grammar and are ready for a long text. Each book opens with its Muse from a set of Italian engravings of about 1465, and paintings of the best known episodes appear throughout.
Dēnique in omnī rē respiciendus fīnis est, in quem sit rēs exitūra: multōs enim deus, postquam fēlīcitātem illīs ostendit, funditus dein ēvertit.
In everything one must look to the end, and to how it will turn out. For the god has shown happiness to many, and then overthrown them root and branch.
