Erasmus wrote letters all his life, to printers and archbishops, to pupils and old friends, and he wrote them in a Latin that is quick and elegant. There are twenty-nine passages in this book, most of them from his letters. In these letters, readers can follow Erasmus from the lodging-houses of Paris to Oxford and Cambridge.

The text and notes are those of P. S. Allen, the editor of Erasmus’s complete letters, who made this selection for readers coming to Erasmus for the first time. This edition marks every long vowel, gives a complete vocabulary, and adds portraits and views by Holbein, Dürer, Hollar and their contemporaries.

Est praetereā mōs nunquam satis laudātus. Sīve quō venīs, omnium ōsculīs exciperis; sīve discēdis aliquō, ōsculīs dīmitteris.
There is besides a custom that can never be praised enough. Wherever you go, everyone greets you with kisses; and when you leave, they send you off with kisses.
