Incipit liber de naturis bestiarum et earum significationibus.
Northumberland Bestiary, fol. 8r

“Here begins the book of the natures of beasts and what they signify.”

Eleven beasts from the Northumberland Bestiary, made in England about 1250 and now at the Getty Museum: the griffin, the ape with her young, the manticore, the bat, the onocentaur, the elephant with its castle of knights, the boar, the hedgehog, the wild ass, the parrot and the bear. The names follow the scribe’s spelling, so the griffin is “grifes” and the elephant “elephans”.
